Rules of Sh*thead.
** Disclaimer **
This is the version of the game as being played in our hostel. If you play using different rules, shweet. If they are interesting, leave them in the comments for us to try out. Obviously, the standard yadda yadda: drink in moderation and only when you are legally of age to, don’t taunt the aussies too much when they lose, never bring tequilla to the drinking game table, etc etc..

The aim of the game is to be the first player to finish all their cards. The game continues until only 1 player is left, who becomes “Sh*thead” for the next round (usually that means they shuffle and deal the next round, although it can also be used for other things like “beer b*tch” [the person who gets everyone else beers] or deciding who does the dishes, etc).
Deal 3 cards face down for each player, followed by 3 cards face up for each player. Separate from this, deal a further 5 cards face down for each player. Place the remaining cards in the center and turn one face up.
The player to the left of the dealer starts, playing a card equal or higher in value than the face up card (suits are irrelevant). If they have two or more cards of the same value, they can be put down together. Each player must pick up the same number of cards from the draw pile as were played in that hand (i.e. keeping 5 cards in hand) until the draw pile is depleted. Players must not forget to pick up while there is still a draw pile – if a player forgets and the next player plays, the one who forgot to draw needs to draw and take a penalty (normally a drink). If a player cannot play, they pick up all the cards in the middle and the next player starts. If 4 of the same cards are put down (either in one go or by building up from several players without any other card values being played), the pile in the middle is “burned” and put to one side (those cards do not come back into the game). Once the draw pile is depleted, players start running down their 5 cards. Once the 5 cards are depleted, they play the 3 face up cards (in any order). If 2 or more of the face up cards have the same value, they can be played together in the same move. If the player has one card remaining out of their “5″ initial cards and it has the same value as one or more of the face up cards, the cards can all be played together. Once the 3 face up cards are depleted, the face down cards are played without first looking at what each card is (i.e. so each card played is a surprise).
Several cards have special values, they are listed below. Because of how the final 3+3 cards are played, each player is allowed to swop their best 3 cards for the face up cards at the beginning of the game before the first player starts.
Wild cards are as follows:
- 10 – Clears or “burns” the deck, can be played on any value card. The player who burns the deck then goes again.
- 2 – Reset card – deck stays behind but values get reset back to the lowest (i.e. anything can be played on it). 2 can be played on any value card.
- 3 – Invisible – can be played on any card, the next player carries on as if it was not there (i.e. playing according to the value of the underlying card in the pile).
- 8 – Skip the next player. Multiple 8′s played at the time skip the appropriate number of people. A player can skip themself if not cautious. An 8 has to be played on a lower or equal valued card, i.e. it cannot be played on a 9 or higher.
- 7 – The next card played has to be under 7 in value, not over it. It has to be played on a lower or equal valued card, i.e. it cannot be played on an 8 or higher.
